A good landscape design will connect you, your home and your property in a way that fits your lifestyle and pleases your eye.
A more traditional look usually involves straight edges and geometric shapes.
This can also be a good choice for a contemporary home.
An informal or naturalistic look can be achieved with rounded edges and freer shapes.
Your landscape design can define one part of your property as a formal area, separating it from the private areas you use as a family which can have a more relaxed feel.
In addition to the style of the design that appeals to you, the materials and plants that will be used are important considerations. For instance a clipped hedge is considered more formal than a colorful flower bed. Brick or pavers generally have a more traditional feel, while stonework has a more natural look.
However, it’s not necessary to limit the design to strictly formal or informal, in fact, a little of one can emphasize the other, as in the case of a hedge behind an informal mixed border.
